Window Unit vs. Mini-Split: Which Is Best for Your Extra Room?

Cooling a bonus room in your Yulee, Florida, home can be complicated if central air isn’t an option. Extending ductwork can be too costly, or your air conditioner might be undersized for the additional room. To solve this dilemma, you may consider installing a separate system, such as a window unit or a mini-split system. Read on to learn whether a window unit or a mini-split is better for your extra room.

Window Units

Window units, as the name suggests, fit into a window and use electricity to cool the room. They are affordable and usually easy to install. If you don’t have ductwork for central air, they’re certainly a viable option.

Window units have also improved over the years and are no longer as loud or as large energy consumers as they once were. However, they still aren’t the most efficient option available. Additionally, if you’re on the first floor, a window unit could make it easier for a burglar to enter through that window.

Ductless Mini-Splits

Ductless mini-splits are installed on your wall or ceiling instead of in the window, and they operate with very little noise. You are unlikely to notice a mini-split in your home, especially when compared to a window unit. Mini-splits are extremely energy efficient. They can help you save on utility bills and reduce maintenance and repair costs.

Which Is Right for You?

If you’re on a tight budget, you might lean toward the window unit since the upfront cost is lower. However, you’ll pay more on your electric bill because window units aren’t as energy efficient. Ductless mini-splits are efficient, quiet, and much more aesthetically pleasing than window units. If you can afford the upfront cost of a mini-split, it’s worth the investment to cool your bonus room.
