3 Noises Your AC System Can Make That Mean Danger

If you're a homeowner, your family will look to you for solutions to all household problems, especially those that cause disruptive and disturbing noises. Beyond stopping the nuisance of sounds produced by your HVAC unit, you must ensure the continual production of refreshing air for your family and guests. Review these common noises that signal danger for the AC system in your Jacksonville, FL, home:

Rattling: Simple or Serious?

Your first step is to locate the source of the rattling. Is it coming from the compressor located outside your home? If so, turn your unit off, flip the breaker supplying power to the compressor, check the unit for small debris that might have fallen through the grate, and remove any items you find.

If you notice evidence that the object caused damage to the fan or compressor parts, call a professional. If the rattling noise is coming from the indoor unit, you will need a qualified service technician to inspect the unit and make the necessary repairs. Consider avoiding future problems by signing up for an HVAC preventive maintenance plan.

Humming: Normal or Clanking?

Gentle humming sounds generally offer reassurance that your AC system is doing its job. The motor hums, and cold air flows through vents into each room of your house.

However, humming can escalate into more of a clanking or clattering sound. These sounds indicate that some part is loose, damaged, or broken. Unless it's repaired immediately, the issue will only get worse. By repairing such damage at the earliest sign of trouble, you save yourself from the inevitably higher cost that results from a compounded problem.

Hissing: Light or Loud?

Light hissing sounds sometimes indicate that the air filter is either improperly installed or not the correct size. You should be able to trace the hissing sound to the filter and make the necessary adjustments.

Louder hissing could indicate that air is escaping through the ductwork. In that situation, you’re cooling spaces you don’t use and spending more money to cool the rooms of your home. You'll want to call an HVAC contractor as soon as possible to stop the leaking.

We hope you’ll call Ed's Comfort Solutions when you need HVAC services. We’ll inspect your system and make the necessary repairs.
